A delightful, affordable red table wine from the Douro Valley – CARM 2011 red is permanently on the menu at O Cantinho, one of the many family-run Portuguese restaurants along Stockwell Road – also known as little Portugal and a regular bolthole we visit when we miss the summer holidays…

This is a bold, characteristically spicy Douro red, made from a blend of native Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional – aged for 12 months in oak barrels. It is quite chewy, with a distinct “anise” aroma and long finish on the palate. Great with big ballsy meat dishes such as thick, rustic stews of beef and beans, or classic Portuguese one-pot dishes such as Cozida Portugesa (mixed boiled meats with cabbage and carrots) or Cataplana – a rich seafood stew with saffron.
