A relatively new and very welcome addition to Brixton’s bustling Atlantic Road is Chix & Buck’s Wine Parlour. Run by a charming duo who also manage Chix & Buck’s niche wine importing and distribution business, The Wine Parlour is both a shop, a tasting room and an “Enoteca-style” hangout open every day except Tuesdays.
Chix & Buck champions small, independent wine producers – family-run affairs with long histories which have maintained small production levels and are not known beyond their countries of origin. The aim is to introduce lesser known grapes, or wines to the UK audience at affordable prices – wines are reasonable and the range is limited but very interesting. Beyond wine, Chix & Buck also sells cognac, Grappa, sherry, sparkling and olive oil. A particular favourite is the Sparkling XO Méthode Traditionelle made with 1% cognac which wafts through the bubbles with a subtle warmth and adds a real twist to the whole affair of quaffing fizz.
You can perch at the bar and order from an ever rotating range of wines by the glass from the enomatic dispenser, accompanied by boards of cheese and quince or French charcuterie, or pick a wine by the bottle to drink in or take away. There’s a tasting room where monthly wine tastings are hosted, or it can be booked for parties and events. This summer they’ve introduced a garden courtyard with a few tiny tables scattered about.
The atmosphere at Chix & Buck is informal and cosy. By default, the small space invites conversation with other drinkers and the staff are all highly versed in the wine selection as well as cheerful and smiley, making helpful suggestions and offering great pairing advice. You could easily lose an evening sipping and sniffing, watching what other people are drinking then accidentally buying up a case (it happens) and forgetting you had a dinner booking later…
